STRONG-CT EVENTS

Fall 2008

SAVE THE DATES

The following events are available to STRONG-CT students over the next semester, fall 2008.  Please review the options below and plan accordingly to attend these events.  All STRONG-CT students are required to attend the Welcome Event.  The other events all have limited capacities.  We would like scholars to select at least one of them, but you may be able to attend more than one if space allows.

September 19 (5 -7pm) – Welcome Event

This is the STRONG-CT opening ceremony, where students will have an opportunity to meet the new Strong- CT students as well as interact and catch up with current students. This year’s welcome event will be a banquet at UCONN in Storrs. There will be several guest speakers from different areas in science. Come prepared with questions you may have about your future careers.

October 18th - CT River Expedition / River Quest Tour

Cruise down the CT River hosted by environmentalists and naturalists knowledgeable about the environmental issues and wildlife concerns with the river. Topics will include water quality, management of CT resources, and non point source pollution issues. Check out the website:  http://www.ctriverexpeditions.org/ . You will also be able to see a description of some of the things you will observe on the cruise at this time of year.

Trip Details:  The River Quest cruise will run out of Essex and will last about 2 hours.

October 11th or 25th - Rapid Bio-Assessment / Salem rivers and streams

This date is dependent on water flow and will be the second or fourth Saturday morning 9:30am until approx. 12:00 p.m. in October.  Wear appropriate clothing (for hiking) and bring something to drink and eat. Rain or shine unless there is severe weather.

Trip Details: Led by Diba Khan Bureau, Professor of Environmental & Civil Engineering/Director of STRONG-CT at Three Rivers Community College.  This activity will consist of hands on field research with the collection of specimens within area streams and rivers.  Students may also need to be briefed beforehand (minor training) in order to participate.

November 7 & 21- A Day in the Life of a Scientist

Students will shadow a PhD graduate student in the Biomedical Science program at the University of Connecticut Health Center. This will provide a direct opportunity to see how research is done on a day to day basis and learn more about a current and active area of research. The visit might also entail attending a class or research seminar depending on the graduate student's schedule for that day. Discussions with the graduate student will provide insights into both the concerns and joys of graduate student life. Lunch will be provided.

This will be on a first come first served basis.  Email Luis now to reserve a spot.

Additional events, including a Science Showcase at UConn and Husky for Day (an opportunity for community college students to shadow STRONG-CT students at UConn) will be added. What other trips, events or workshops would you like to have? Please let Teshia or Luis know your ideas.
