Exploring Pelargoniums
Chelsea Lane, a Biology major who just finished her first year at UConn was the only undergraduate student to be selected to participate in a field-based project to study plant ecology and evolution in Southern Africa. This project was spearheaded by Cynthia Jones, Associate Professor within Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Chelsea is no stranger to travel as she has participated in exchange programs to Germany and Australia in the past.
Sailing Aboard the Amistad
Erica Whyte presents her journey to the other STRONG-CT students at the 2007 Welcome Event
Erica Whyte, a Marine Biology major just finished her first year as well and is one of two undergraduates from UConn among eight other students from various colleges to participate in the four-semester college program at sea, “Sankofa, Sailing in the Wake of our Ancestors”. Students will learn navigational skills, sailing procedures, and the oceanography of the Atlantic as the trip will focus on the transatlantic slave trade and the history and legacy of the 53 Amistad Africans who were kidnapped and sold as slaves. Summer Internship with the Center for Eliminating Health Disparties among Latinos (CEHDL)
Sandra Ruiz presents her summer internship to the other
STRONG-CT students at the 2007 Welcome Event
Sandra Ruiz was one of three UConn students who were sponsored by CEHDL to work in the field of health disparities among Latinos for twelve weeks. Students pursued a comprehensive program encompassing rotations in Research, the Hartford Hospital Clinical Research Center, Primary Care, HIV, Inpatient Medicine, and Women's Health. Sandra and the other students presented the study findings to a scientific and healthcare audience from Hartford Hospital, University of Connecticut, Charter Oak Health Care.
Spain
Porscha McLean, a Nutritional Science major who just finished her sophomore students will be spending six weeks in Spain this year in order to be immersed with the language and culture. Porscha, who plans to utilize her degree in Nutritional Science within an organization that provides community outreach involving various health and social service type of initiatives. Porscha went to South Africa last summer as a member of IMPACT and worked with individuals affected by HIV and AIDS.
