Peer Mentor Position Description

The STRONG-CT peer mentor program is an interactive program designed to facilitate a smooth transition for students who are STRONG-CT participants interested in the life sciences at the University of Connecticut.  It creates a link between curricular and co-curricular activities for our first year students and transfer students from Manchester Community College, Three Rivers Community College, and Quinebaug Valley Community College. The program also extends the outreach beyond the UConn campus to students currently at the community college through our virtual peer mentor component.  The overall goal of this program is to support students as they progress through the program and to increase the retention of the STRONG-CT participants.

Qualifications, including but not limited to:

  • Academic success
  • History of student leadership and or involvement in campus life
  • Sensitivity to and interest in issues of diversity and community service
  • Enthusiasm for the College, students, staff, faculty, academic and co-curricular life
  • Willingness and ability to model appropriate behavior, set goals, and to mentor new students
  • Achievement of a minimum of sophomore standing (24 credits)

General Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a mentor for students /meet on a regular basis with your assigned student
  • Virtual peer mentors will communicate electronically on a regular basis
  • Attend and participate in STRONG-CT events
  • Model effective leadership and communication skills
  • Attend all training sessions and in-service programs to be held throughout the year
  • Acquaint new students with campus services, activities, and building locations (fall semester)
  • Share academic and college transition experiences
