Colleges seek to expose potential scientists to new opportunities

MANCHESTER — Although many students from families who have not traditionally attended college are pursuing higher education these days, such students are conspicuously absent in science majors, according to Hedley Freake, professor of nutritional science at the University of Connecticut.

To remedy this situation, a newly implemented program called STRONGCT (Science and Technology Reaching Out to New Generations in Connecticut), is seeking and accepting minority and first-generation college students who have an interest in obtaining a degree and pursuing a career in the life sciences.

In addition to UConn, interested students may choose to begin their studies at Manchester Community College, Three Rivers in Norwich, or Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson and transfer to UConn to complete four-year and perhaps graduate degrees... read more...

Strong support for students

Najira Harris has a clear picture of where she's going in life. The 18-year-old wants to be a doctor because she wants to care for people and make them feel they are not alone when they are sick.

"I'll be their doctor, their counselor, their friend," Harris says.
